The Zeppelin Hindenburg Airship History
When thinking about airships, the one that will spring to most peoples mind is the Zeppelin built German Airship Hindenburg. This, of course, will more than likely be the thought of a raging inferno crashing to the ground at the Lakehurst Naval Air Station in New Jersey, USA. It should be remembered that the Hindenburg (and her sister ship the Graf Zeppelin II) where the largest airships ever build and an amzing technical feat. At a time when air travel was limited and uncomfortable, the Zeppelins carried passengers in the utmost luxury all the way across Atlantic. There are still many theories about the exact cause of the Hindenburg airship disaster, but it is certain that the use of flamable hydrogen might have played a contributing factor. Had the Germans been able (or allowed) to use helium the fire may not have been so quick to burn, as helium is an inert gas which can even act as a fire extinguisher! In airship history there is none as famous as the Hindenburg, even though this high profile disaster may have ended the golden age of airship travel.
