Airship Snippets : The Three Design Types
There are three main types of airship design that most, but not quite all, airships fall in to. The first of these was perfected by the famous Zeppelin company of Germany. Rigid Airships These designs involve a complete, rigid frame over which the envelope is placed. Bags of lift gas (formerly hydrogen but now helium) are usually attached to the rigid frame and inflated to provide lift. Semi-Rigid Airships Not requiring a full rigid frame, the semi-rigid type uses a partial frame to support essential parts such as engines or stability fins. The remainder of the envelope is supported by inflated lift gas. Non-Rigid Airships Similar to the idea of hot air balloons, the non-rigid airship uses lift gas as the sole means of inflating and maintaining the shape of the airship. Using shaped lift gas bags enables the shape of the airship to be kept.
